EVA STIRRED FROM SLEEP on the leather couch in the living room. She blinked, the darkened interior of the house suggested she’d been asleep a lot longer than the twenty minutes she’d planned.

Maybe he’d come home or maybe he hadn’t. Anger simmered just beneath her worry. Whether she was supposed to ask where he was going or not, why were both men abandoning her in the home on her first weekend?

Rude. Just rude.

The thunderous roar of a large four-stroke engine pumped louder and louder as it rolled down the street and up the drive. The bass of the compression strokes of the pistons were so cacophonous she could feel them in the walls.

She unwrapped herself from the blankets and swung her legs to the side. The nap hadn’t worked in making her feel refreshed. Instead she felt like she’d been dunked in a vat of viscous chocolate and the longer she’d lain there, the harder it had gotten.

Unable to stop the yawn, she covered her mouth and pushed up from the couch.

The front door opened and closed, the sound echoing through the quiet, dark house.

“Eva?” Blake’s footsteps carried him through the house until he stood at the top of the stairs and looked down into the living room. He flipped on a light switch. “What are you doing in the dark?”

She looked away from him. “I just woke up from a nap.”

“You’ve been here by yourself all day? I thought Mac would come back, if I was gone.” He stepped down the stairs, one at a time, like he wasn’t sure he wanted to go further until he adjusted to the next step.

She nodded carefully, unsure why that would matter to him.

“Oh, Eva. I’m sorry.” He finished the stairs and approached her, his eyes soft. “I just wanted you to be able to see Mac without me being in the way.”

“You’re not in the way. Mac doesn’t care about seeing me.” Eva rubbed her eyes. She couldn’t wake up. “I need to go for a ride.” She moved to glance out the window, her shoulders slumped. “Never mind.”

His voice still soft, Blake walked up behind her and glanced out the egressed window with her. “Never mind what? You don’t ride at night?”

She shook her head. “My dad never let me and when Mac got in that wreck that one summer, I just kind of...” Her voice trailed off and she shrugged. “It’s probably time to eat, right?” She couldn’t snap out of her funk. Oh, how desperately she needed a ride.

Blake watched her and carefully took her by the arm and turned her to face him. “You look stoned. Are you okay?”

“It’s been a long day and I just want to get on my bike.” She had to look terrible. She needed a pick-me-up and her bike was usually the only thing that did it for her.

He searched her face and nodded. “Let’s go.”

“I don’t have a light on my bike.” Something her dad had refused to get her. He’d always said she didn’t need it to race.
